Julep Nail Vernis Sienna
2011/9/3 14:04
Before I start, I want to address that I’m aware of the issues some bloggers (and non-bloggers) are having with Julep. I updated my previous Julep Maven post with my opinion at the bottom and wanted to point out that my review of the box hasn’t changed. I hope Julep will do their part as a responsible company and continue to provide prompt customer service, but most importantly, be transparent and honest with all of their customers about any kinks they encounter in their system as a small, relatively new company. Update: Julep has provided an apology and solution. See my post here.
With that said, let’s talk nail polish! Being a sucker for anything gold, I chose Sienna as my first Julep polish to wear. It wins my instant love in the color department, and it also reminds me of a certain limited edition Dior Vernis from last year. Can you guess which one?

Sienna is a pale, shimmery, silvery gold. The finish is metallic, bordering on foil. It has a somewhat gritty, semi-matte, and very flat look that is very different from other shimmery, metallic finishes.
If you feel yellow, 24k-like golds, clash with your skin tone, but still would like to try a gold-tone polish, this would be the perfect one. It’s so metallic and pale that, under certain artificial lighting, it almost looks silver.

The first coat I applied made me think this was going to be a dud. It left patches and streaks, the polish dragging and leaving behind bald spots. However, it redeemed itself on the second coat, applying more smoothly and covering up the patchiness of the first coat. Perhaps it doesn’t apply to the smooth surface of a base coat, but glides over itself? I can only guess. The streaks are less noticeable once the polish dries.
Comparison of Dior Timeless Gold and Julep Sienna
Were you able to guess the Dior polish I had in mind? It’s Dior Timeless Gold from the Holiday 2010 collection. It’s loved by many cool-toned girls as a gold they, too, find wearable. I’ve always thought of it as a champagne gold, but putting it next to Sienna, it appears far less gold and more taupe/pewter. They both possess that glitter-shimmer, flat finish.
I must say, Timeless Gold wins in terms of formula. It applies extremely smoothly and evenly from the first coat compared to Sienna. It also dries extremely fast; while Timeless Gold is dry to the touch and you can run your finger over it within minutes, Sienna took quite a bit longer to dry. In fact, I got impatient and applied the second coat when the first coat was only semi-dry. A quick-dry top coat is a must for Sienna.
Sienna and Timeless Gold are similar, but definitely not interchangeable. Considering Timeless Gold is limited edition and no longer available, Sienna is a good alternative to consider.
Overall, I’m pleased with my first Julep polish and I love the color of Sienna! It retails for $14 and can be purchased at Julep.com. I received mine as part of the Introductory “It-Girl” Julep Maven box.
Do you like gold ?

When I think of gold, I think of 70s disco party! By the way, I like how you’re reviewing other brands besides the big ones too!
I tried on something new this week from Nail Inc. London (albeit just on one nail when I was browsing at Sephora) Any experiences with that label in particular?

Haha 70s disco party! That’s a good thing, right? And thanks for your feedback. I have a tendency to be brand loyal, but I know there are gems in other brands.
I’ve heard so many good things about Nails Inc! They were difficult to obtain outside of Europe prior to their Sephora launch, so they’ve been getting a lot of attention. Which color did you try? There are so many choices!

humm I see why you love gold! It looks awesome on you! It’s totally your colour. I thought it is quite clever to do side by side comparison, so there is no mistake in lighting or camera setting. Did you take it off and apply Julep afterwards, or left the nail polish different? Once upon a time I alternate 2 colours on my fingers! fun days
