Julep Nail Vernis Sienna Original (Discontinued) …

I mentioned in my previous post that I thought the Julep Sienna I received in this month’s Maven Box seemed different from the one in the very first It Girl Intro Box from a year ago. I dug out the original Sienna and, held side-by-side, it was clear that they’re different colors.
Can you tell which is which?

If you guessed that the one on top is the newer Sienna from the August 2012 Maven Box and the bottom one is the original version, you’re right! A little googling yielded that this isn’t the first time Julep has reformulated colors and that they make these sort of announcements on their Facebook page. But hey, I don’t check! I wish they’d indicate reformulated colors when they send out their monthly Maven Box email.
In any case, let’s first take a look at the newer, current version of Sienna.

Julep Nail Vernis Sienna (new/reformulated) swatch in indirect sunlight
This current, reformulated Julep Sienna?is a pale, shimmery rose-bronze gold with a foil/chrome finish. Much like the original Sienna, it has a somewhat flat, matte look in indirect light, but it comes alive with the help of top coat and overhead light. It’s nearly silver where light hits, while the shadowed areas appear to be a combination of bronze, silver, and gold.
The formula seems somewhat improved from the previous version, but I still wouldn’t say this is the easiest polish to apply. Streaks are most apparent during application, but thankfully become less obvious after it dries, and even less so with top coat. You still have to apply in light strokes to make sure bald patches don’t occur, and try to apply in one smooth direction so streaks look uniform. Possibly because of the shimmer, I found it difficult to paint a clean arch along the cuticles, so patience is a virtue here!

Julep Nail Vernis Sienna new (reformulated) vs. original (discontinued) in indirect sunlight
In indirect natural light, the original and reformulated versions look quite similar. The original is what I would call pale, champagne gold, while the newer one has a clearly warmer undertone which looks rosy compared to the original. As you can see, the finish remains similar with streaks and individual shimmer less apparent from afar; they look like little dental fillings on my fingers!

Perhaps you can see more of a difference between the two under direct sunlight. Not my best photo, but I hope you can tell that they’re extremely shiny and chrome-like under the light. The bronze tone in the newer Sienna is more apparent here.

How can you tell which version of Sienna you own? Well, other than if you’d received it this month, the newer version possesses the newer label with “Sienna” written on the bottom of the bottle, while the older label does not indicate the name there. (The older formula has the name on the side of the bottle with a large barcode.) If you purchase Sienna from now on, you’ll be sure to own the newer one as the original is now deemed discontinued. Be aware that not all colors with the same name but updated labels have been reformulated.
I don’t mind this Sienna reformulation (other than that I wasn’t aware of it) because the rosy-bronze gold seems to suit my warm-toned skin better than the original champagne gold. I’m just curious why Julep had decided to subtly change the hue but kept the same name!
